George Carlin on “The American Dream”: A Few Dirty Words and A Whole Lot of Sense

Sometimes, to get a really clear perspective on things, we need to turn to a comedian. Unfortunately, we can’t get updates from the dear, departed George Carlin. But a lot of his work comes off as if it were written yesterday. Such it is with his 2005 routine, “The American Dream.”

Thanks to the fellow here, we have a transcript (with a little copy-editing from yours truly)—and performance video.

If expletives offend you, this is a good point to…click back to the home page. Otherwise, ladies and gents, Mr. George Carlin….

….there’s a reason education SUCKS, and it’s the same reason it will never, ever,  EVER be fixed.

It’s never going to get any better, don’t look for it. Be happy with what you’ve got.

Because the owners, the owners of this country, don’t want that. I’m talking about the real owners now, the BIG owners! The Wealthy… the REAL owners! The big wealthy business interests that control things and make all the important decisions.

Forget the politicians. They are irrelevant. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don’t. You have no choice! You have OWNERS! They OWN YOU. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They’ve long since bought—and paid for—the Senate, the Congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies, so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They got you by the balls.

They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying, lobbying, to get what they want.  Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but I’ll tell you what they don’t want:

They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well-informed, well-educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. That’s against their interests.

That’s right. They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around a kitchen table and think about how badly they’re getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago. They don’t want that!

You know what they want? They want obedient workers. Obedient workers, people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork. And just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shitty jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it, and now they’re coming for your Social Security money. They want your retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street—and you know something? They’ll get it. They’ll get it all from you sooner or later ‘cause they own this fucking place! It’s a big club, and you ain’t in it! You, and I, are not in the big club.

By the way, it’s the same big club they use to beat you over the head with all day long when they tell you what to believe. All day long beating you over the head with their media telling you what to believe, what to think and what to buy. The table has tilted, folks. The game is rigged and nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care! Good honest hard-working people; white collar, blue collar it doesn’t matter what color shirt you have on. Good honest hard-working people continue—these are people of modest means—continue to elect these rich cock suckers who don’t give a fuck about you….they don’t give a fuck about you… they don’t give a FUCK about you.

They don’t care about you at all… at all… AT ALL.  And nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care. That’s what the owners count on. The fact that Americans will probably remain willfully ignorant of the big red, white and blue dick that’s being jammed up their assholes everyday, because the owners of this country know the truth.

It’s called the American Dream—because you have to be asleep to believe it.

ESTO SE PARECE A EL POEMA DE LEON FELIPE QUE DICE: YO NO SE MUCHAS COSA ..ES VERDAD
DIGO TAN SOLO LO QUE HE VISTO
Y HE VISTO..QUE LA CUNA DEL HOMBRE LA MECEN CON CUENTOS
QUE LOS GRITOS DE ANGUSTIA DEL HOMBRE LOS AHOGAN CON CUENTOS
QUE LOS HUESOS DEL HOMBRE LOS ENTIERRAN CON CUENTOS
Y QUE EL MIEDO DEL HOMBRE HA INVENTADO TODOS LOS CUENTOS
YO SE MUY POCAS COSAS ES VERDAD
PERO ME HAN DORMIDO CON TODOS LOS CUENTOS
    Y SE …TODOS LOS CUENTOS

This great poem is by the Spanish expatriot León Felipe (q.v. on Wikipedia).  I would render it this way:

        “I don’t know many things, it’s true
I say only what I have seen
And I have seen that the cradle of man is rocked with stories
That the shouts of anguish of man are drowned with stories”

[Here should be another line, left out by armando:
"que el llanto del hombre lo taponan los cuentos", which means]

“That the stories have blocked the complaints of man
And the stories have invented the fears of man
I don’t know many things it is true.
But I have slept with all the storiesAnd I know all the stories”

Indeed, Armando is spot on, that León’s warning is the very same as Carlin’s.  Or as Stephen Daedalus says in Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist, “We are an unfortunate priest-ridden race, and always were and always will be till the end of the chapter”, except that our priests over here are mostly in pulpits of media.  Still we fall for the same lies over and over and over.

I DID AND DO LOVE CARLIN, HIS DEATH A FEW YEARS AGO WAS A LOSS FOR EVERY AMERICAN. GO TO U TUBE AND VIEW HIS THOUGHTS ON ORGANIZED RELIGION. AFTER SEEING IT YOU MIGHT NEVER GO TO CHURCH AGAIN.

It bears pointing out that he says “getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago” — that’d be about 1980 or so — think Reagan.

In the 50’s and 60’s there actually was an American Dream.  It died with JFK in Dallas, but even then the afterglow lingered into the Great Society, the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act — so THEY kept on killing, RFK and MLK, always False Flag, always MKULTRA on steroids.  Then came OKC, then came 9/11.  It’s always the same, BUT for the fact that it gets much worse at an accelerating rate, like — like the speed of a brick falling from the top of the World Trade Center in freefall.

In my opinion, this is probably the screed that got George killed by the government.  They have the ability to cause people to have heart attacks, they can inject fast acting cancers into the body ; think Aaron Russo, Frank Zappa.  And don’t forget who was behind the deaths of John Lennon, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and the list goes on.  What did all these people have in common?  They were high profile, people listened to them, and the Contollers cannot have an elightened public.  Just as George said, in 2005.
